Drug or alcohol addiction is mostly a result of ‘having too much of a goo thing’. When hip and modern lifestyle has become equivalent to endless parties where alcohol binging is common, people find it easier to say no to a glass of drink. Some use alcohol and controlled substances or prescription drugs such as antidepressants as an escape for problems that they can’t face, frustrations that they couldn’t handle on their own and emotions that they don’t want to deal with. These scenarios are often the start of drug and alcohol addiction. Drug and alcohol addition have been listed as among the most prevalent diseases in many continents. Finding the right road to treatment has become essential in giving sufferers their chance for recovery.

There are actually a number of ways in order to recover from addiction of any kind. You will find that there are different rehabilitation options for you to undergo especially when you are seeking ways to recover.  There are some factors that need to be considered before you choose a facility for rehabilitation of drug or alcohol dependent. This process can be difficult especially when you are alone.

Seeking Help for Drug and Alcohol Dependents

The first thing that you need to do is to remind yourself that you will be seeking help. You actually need to accept the fact that you need help and reach out to people who are willing to help you out.

Many people have a helpful community and organizations and religious fellowships that are ready to assist you and help you out. Drug and alcohol abuse is not a minor matter. Statistics by the National Institutes of Health show that around 18 million American adults have trouble with their drinking while the Journal of the American Medical Association found that over 15 percent of American teenagers show signs that are consistent with alcohol abuse.

Once you have decided to seek help for these issues, you can ask someone – a friend or a family member to help you out. Then you will undergo the process of choosing the rehabilitation program or rehabilitation facility. There are different types of abused or addiction treatment programs that you can choose from:

Inpatient Addiction Treatment

There are studies that show that inpatient addiction treatment and inpatient rehabilitation facilities are the most effective and medically sound way to treat addiction. The first phase includes detox, a process wherein the patient is slowly stripped off of the substance they are abuse to. During this process, withdrawal symptoms may appear because the body has become accustomed to specific levels of drugs and/or alcohol. These withdrawal symptoms may vary and can be severe or life threatening, which is why constant and medical monitoring is important during the first process of detoxification.

The next phase is treating the psychological addiction to drugs and alcohol. This phase of recovery normally involves the utilization of medical, psychological and peer support. Inpatient treatments are usually adjusted to the individual needs of the person at a particular point in recovery. Individual counseling sessions, group therapy, life skills courses and complementary activities are generally a part of inpatient addiction treatment.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Options

Before the patient can take an outpatient rehabilitation program, he or she will have to meet with an intake counselor who will assess the patient’s situation on whether outpatient treatment is right for them. Considerations like the type of addiction, its duration, the patient’s health and life commitments are all a factor on whether an outpatient rehabilitation program is possible.

Outpatient programs vary in length and employ some of the treatment practices as inpatient care. The programs may also include individual therapy, group support, and life skills workshop. Aside from these, participants of outpatient programs are required to take weekly drug tests. This is to ensure that they are not reverting back to their addiction once they are away from the facility.

Extended Care and Long Term Rehabilitation

Extended care rehabilitation is an ongoing care or treatment that continues even after the patient has completed the rehabilitation program. There are various forms of extended care treatment facilities and the patients can live with support groups that also attend to recovering addicts regularly.

This type of rehabilitation program is available for patients who are finished with their individual rehabilitation program, but they still feel the need of additional support before returning to their homes. Most patients would still feel insecure even after the rehabilitation is a success that is why they would want to utilize extended care rehabilitation.

One form of extended care facility is the sober living homes. These are homes that can offer a transitional environment of support for the patient before they return home. They live in the facility with other recovering individuals, take on responsibilities such as a job or a chore, and at the same time, attend group therapy sessions.

Long term rehabilitation is simply the inpatient rehabilitation that involves a long term stay for the patient. This type of program has a high success of rate for those patients who are suffering from severe addictions to those who are having trouble with chronic relapse. Long term programs usually include detox facilities, support groups, counseling, and individual and group classes, which will prepare the patient to live a stable life outside without fear of relapse.

These are the options that you can choose whenever you consider treatment for ongoing addiction. People who are dependent to drugs of any kind usually have the wrong idea that there is no help or hope for them that is why they have a hard time looking for guidance or help. But this is not the case. There are different options for you when it comes to recovering. You can talk to your doctor about it, ask guidance from close friends and family members, as well as inquire local mental health clinics, community health centers and general hospitals. If you just open your heart and mind to treatment and recovery, then your options will come flowing in.
